I read in Eat, Pray, Love [more on that later] that Ubud is considered the cultural center of Bali. It is known for having the best art, dance, and bookshops. Our first night there we checked out The Fire and Trance Dance. I was a little concerned before the start of the show because the program said that a chorus of men were going to "shit" together in a concentric circle. Luckily, this proved to be a problem with translation and not a Balinese version of 2 girls one cup. The men merely sat in a circle and chanted a chorus the entire show. It was pretty relaxing.
The also saw the Legong Trunajaya, which is the dance of love and emotions. Part of the dance includes the performers all using crazy eyes. I'm guessing they are some part of the courtship practice.
